Summer Student Scholarships (SS) 2024: (next call envisaged to launch in October 2024)

The Summer Student Scholarships support undergraduate students in health or social care-related disciplines to complete short research projects during the summer. The purpose of the scholarship scheme is to encourage an interest in research and give students an opportunity to become familiar with research techniques.

The key changes to the scheme are the following:

The 2024 round of the Summer Student Scholarship (SS) will launch in mid-October 2023 with a deadline for applications in mid-December 2023. The outcome of the scheme will be communicated by early-February 2024. This is earlier than in previous years to facilitate successful students and their supervisors to obtain the necessary approvals (ethics or animal) prior to commencing the scholarship.

Funding will be increased to €400/week.

The way the HRB selects successful applications will change in this round. Following an eligibility check of applicants, supervisors and projects (as in 2023), the HRB will introduce randomisation into the selection process to ensure that the selection of successful applications from all eligible applications is progressed in an efficient, unbiased and transparent way. The randomisation process of eligible applications will replace the postal panel review process (which took place over a number of months after the detailed eligibility checks).

Additional Information

In line with the HRB strategy, the project must fall within one of the following research areas:  patient-oriented and clinical research, health services research or population health research. Applications outside those remits will be made ineligible and not funded.

The HRB will make an award to a host institution nominated in the application. Summer Scholars will be paid €400 per week for a minimum of six and a maximum of eight weeks by the host institution.

The studentship must be taken at full-time basis.
