HRB - who we are and what we do

The Health Research Board (HRB) is a State Agency under the Department of Health. We support and fund health and social care research and provide evidence to inform policy and practice.

We have 105 staff, an annual budget of €52 million, and manage an investment portfolio of approximately €200 million.

A ten-member Board oversees our work. Board members are appointed by the Minister for Health and serve a five-year term.

Our main areas of activity are:

  • Funding research proposals and managing grants
  • Conducting evidence reviews to underpin decision-making in health
  • Managing data collections in the areas of alcohol and drug treatment and deaths, disability and psychiatric admissions and discharges.
