Summer Student Scholarship 2022

The Summer Student Scholarships 2022 call opened on Tuesday 16 November. The deadline for submission of applications is Thursday 20 January 2022 at 13:00.

Structured PhD Programme in Population Health and Health Services Research (PHHSR) 2022

The international panel met virtually on Tuesday 9 November. The leadership team were interviewed as part of the review. The team has been invited to respond to the Panel report. The Panel recommendation will be brought to the HRB Board, for final approval, in February 2022.

HRCI/HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2022

Participating charity calls have now closed and applications are under-going peer review.

Investigator-Led Projects (ILP) 2022

Following eligibility checking, 1 application was deemed ineligible and 1 application was withdrawn from the process. 118 eligible applications are now undergoing peer and public review.

Emerging Investigator Awards for Health (EIA) 2022 

15 Lead Applicants have been invited to submit a Full Application. The deadline for application submission is Thursday 13 January 2022.

ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 Joint Transnational Call  (2021)

Successful consortia at pre-proposal stage have been invited to submit a full proposal with a submission deadline of 20 December 2021.

Research Collaborative in Quality and Patient Safety 2021 (RCQPS)

The review panel assessing Full proposal submissions will convene virtually at the end of November to discuss applications and make funding recommendations to the HRB Board.

European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) Joint Transnational Call (2022)

The  Joint Transnational Call on “Development of new analytic tools and pathways to accelerate diagnosis and facilitate diagnostic monitoring of rare diseases” launched on 14 December 2021 with a submission deadline for pre-proposals of 16 February 2022.

ERA PerMed Joint Transnational Call (2022)

The Joint Transnational Call on “Prevention in Personalised Medicine” opened 1 December 2021 with a submission deadline for pre-proposals of 17 February 2022.

Research visits – Ulysses 2022

The HRB is partnering with the Irish Research Council’s (IRC) Ulysses travel grant to fund a number of research visits to France in three areas, Patient-oriented and clinical research, Population health research and Health services research. Support is provided for short visits to partner institutions, and covers travel and subsistence costs. The deadline is 20 January 2022 at 16.00 with decisions expected in June 2022. Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the EU’s funding programme for research and innovation.

The 2022 calls (Single and two-stage calls) are now open!

Single stage calls close on 21st April 2022 and the first stage of 2-stage calls close on 1st February 2022  Details of these calls are available on the Funding and Tenders Portal Search Funding & Tenders (europa.eu)

Examples of calls are:

Better financing models for health systems, Pre-clinical development of the next generation of immunotherapies for diseases or disorders with unmet medical needs, Development of new effective therapies for rare diseases, developing the next generation of vaccines, Boosting mental health in Europe in times of change and Prevention of obesity throughout the life course to highlight a few.

National Integrated PhD Programme for Medical Practitioners 2022

This is a targeted funding initiative to support a structured national PhD programme to enable integrated clinical and research training for medical practitioners. The application process opened in mid-October with a deadline for submission on 22 of December. The application will be subject to international panel review with a panel interview meeting in early February 2022.

US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership Programme

This is a rolling call. Check the scheme notice for full details.

EU4Health

Action grants:

13 calls for proposals for action grants was launched in Oct with a funding value of €44 Million. Projects in areas such as health data, healthy lifestyles, mental health, cancer and genomics will be supported under these calls. Deadline for submission is 25th Jan 2022. Full details on each call can be found in the call document.

A further call was launched on the 16 Dec to support accreditation and certification of quality assurance schemes for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer screening programmes. Deadline for submission is the 17 February 2022.  For more details visit here.

Applied Partnership Awards 2022 (APA)

The HRB Board have approved the launch of a call for proposals for Applied Partnership Awards (APA) in January 2022. The APA scheme will support applied research projects in which researchers and knowledge users come together to advance timely and relevant research and optimise knowledge translation into policy and practice.

Conference and Events Sponsorship Scheme (CES) 2022

The Conference and Events Sponsorship Scheme 2022 will open on 27 January 2022 and will support health research related events, workshops, or conferences in Ireland. The closing date for applications will be the 24 February 2022.

Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2022

The HRB intends to launch a new call for Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Awards  in Q1 2022, subject to board approval. The scheme supports evaluations of full-scale, definitive interventions of any appropriate design and feasibility studies conducted in preparation for future definitive intervention. More details to follow.

HRCI/HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2022

This scheme funds internationally competitive and innovative research in areas of strategic relevance to HRCI-registered research charities. Those interested in this scheme should contact HRCI for further information. Participating charity calls are now open and listed on the HRCI Open Calls page . Applicants should contact the relevant charity for their specific call details and deadlines for submission for charity endorsement. Further information and instructions for both charities and applicants can be found on the HRB grants page. 

SFI-HRB-Wellcome Research Partnership

To support their new strategy, Wellcome is changing the way they support scientific research. A new range of discovery research funding schemes has been launched and these will open for applications in late summer 2021. All current Wellcome funding schemes will close during 2021. Please check relevant scheme pages for final application deadlines. 

DOROTHY COFUND Programme

The Health Research Board, in collaboration with the Irish research Council (IRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and co-funded by the European Union, is working towards the forthcoming launch of the DOROTHY COFUND programme. Fellowships will have an international outgoing phase of 18 months, followed by a return phase to Ireland of 18 months. DOROTHY is open to applicants from all nationalities are Experienced Researcher (ER), provided they haven’t resided in the outgoing phase country for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the call deadline. It is open to all disciplines, provided that their research topic relates to public health crises. The call launch has been postponed to early 2022 and will be managed by IRC.
