Probing the metabolic response to vasculitic injury: towards a tool for non-invasive monitoring of immune activation in ANCA vasculitis
A major unmet need in the care of patients with glomerulonephritis (GN) is a sensitive and specific means of identifying both the presence and absence of active vasculitic injury. I propose to undertake an in-depth PhD programme involving research that will incorporate pre-clinical and clinical tools to study the urinary metabolomic signature at various stages of active, inactive and tolerant ANCA vasculitis. This project will require the use of an in vivo model of anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO) vasculitis; the informatics expertise available in TCD and of Prof Harry Holthfer, who will also collaborate via his urine exosome programme; incorporation of the UKVAS vasculitis registry data and biobank samples; and access to the ITN tolerance project urine bioresource in UCL.
