The Health Research Board (HRB) has today released the latest edition of the annual Health Research in Action publication showcasing 19 success stories about wide-ranging health and social care research across four themes.
The stories include projects about identifying bacteria linked to increased cancer-risk in the mouth, better care for recurrent miscarriage in Ireland, delivering better evidence for national clinical trial guidelines and leading the first major clinical trial for diabetes during pregnancy.
Welcoming release of Health Research in Action, Dr Mairéad O Driscoll, Chief Executive at the Health Research Board, said:
“We’re delighted to publish another edition of Health Research in Action. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of our researchers and those we fund. It highlights the breadth of influence their work has on people’s health and wellbeing by providing data and evidence for policy makers and potential signposts for future research.
“Health Research in Action is a very digestible and engaging collection of stories that should be informative to the research community and the wider public.
“I also want to thank the public, patients, carers, and health and social care professionals for the role they have in making the work highlighted in this publication possible.”
This year’s edition shows that over €50 million in funding was allocated to 91 projects. The HRB team managing National Health Information Systems serviced 90 requests for data, published four peer-reviewed journal articles, five annual reports and national bulletins on drugs and mental health.

Overall, HRB awards leveraged nearly €205 million on foot of our funding awards, started two industry collaborations and one patent was filed.
