PPI Ignite Award - Dublin City University

Patient and public involvement means carrying out research with or by members of the public rather than to, about or for them. This PPI Ignite award plans to improve patient and public involvement in health and social care research. We will do this by bringing people who use health services (patients, carers, and/or their representatives), members of the general the public (interested in, or potential users of health services), and university staff who carry out health and social research together as equals (no one is more or less important than anyone else). By bringing people together we will help them to work with each other to find out different ways of involving patients and public in health and social care research and how best to do this. To meet the requirements of the PPI Ignite call, we will make this happen in a number of different ways. (1) Find out what PPI activities health and social care researchers are already doing and watch these over time to see if any changes or improvements happen. (2) Develop a plan and tools that will help patients, the public, their representatives and researchers to work together on various health and social care research projects. (3) Design and deliver a training programme with patients, the public, their representatives and health and social care researchers. (4) Carry out some real-life case examples of PPI in health and social care research projects. (5) Assess how well our Ignite project activities helped to improve PPI in health and social care research, find out what patients, the public, their representatives and researchers thought about working together, write a plan for the future progress of PPI in research and share our learning from this project by communicating our findings with all relevant people.
