The effectiveness and safety of pharmacist prescribing: A systematic review was conducted by the HRB Evidence Centre. It examines the safety and effectiveness of pharmacists prescribing compared with other prescribing healthcare professionals.

The review looked at prescribing across a wide range of healthcare population categories (e.g. diabetes, heart failure, and female contraceptive users) across various healthcare settings, including primary care, outpatient, inpatient and community pharmacies.

It found effectiveness and safety outcomes in pharmacist prescribing were significantly improved, or equivalent to, outcomes achieved by medical prescribers.

Dr Áine Teahan, lead author and Senior Researcher at the Health Research Board (HRB), says:

“The HRB is delighted to have this review published on BMJ Open. The findings will inform future decisions around pharmacist prescribing in Ireland.  Additional research on implementation, public and patient preferences, and cost-effectiveness would provide further valuable insights into the potential benefits of pharmacist prescribing at a health system level.”
