Structured PhD Programme in Population Health and Health Services Research (PHHSR) 2022

The application deadline was 11 of October and after an eligibility check it is now under panel review. The international panel will meeting virtually on the 9 of November and the leadership team will be invited to attend an interview.

Investigator-Led Projects (ILP) 2022

This call closed for applications on the 13 September 2021. We received 120 applications and HRB staff are completing eligibility checks.

Emerging Investigator Awards for Health (EIA) 2022 

42 eligible pre-applications were discussed by an international panel virtually on the 13 and 14 of October and 15 Lead Applicants were invited to full application stage. All lead applicants have been notified and will receive feedback in the coming weeks.

Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP) 2021

Following international Peer and Public review, 29 applications were shortlisted and invited to submit a response to reviewer comments. Applications are now undergoing Stage 2 international Panel review in advance of the Panel review meeting on 1 October 2021. The final outcome is expected to be communicated to all applicants in mid October 2021.

ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 Joint Transnational Call for Proposals (2021)

Pre-proposals from successful consortia are currently undergoing evaluation.

Collaborative Doctoral Awards in Patient-Focused Research (CDA) 2021

The interview Panel meeting met virtually on 19 and 20 of October and eight Leadership Teams were interviewed. The Panel funding recommendation will be discussed by the HRB Board in mid-November. The outcome will be then notified to the leadership teams.

Research Collaborative in Quality and Patient Safety 2021 (RCQPS)

Full proposal submissions were received by deadline of 8 September 2021, and are currently undergoing peer review.

Open Calls

Research visits – Ulysses 2022

The HRB is partnering with the Irish Research Council’s (IRC) Ulysses travel grant to fund a number of research visits to France in three areas, Patient-oriented and clinical research, Population health research and Health services research. Support is provided for short visits to partner institutions, and covers travel and subsistence costs. The deadline is 20 January 2022 at 16.00 with decisions expected in June 2022. Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the EU’s funding programme for research and innovation.

The 2022 calls (Single and two-stage calls) are now open!

Single stage calls close on 21st April 2022  and the first stage of 2-stage calls close on 1st February 2022  Details of these calls are available on the Funding and Tenders Portal Search Funding & Tenders (europa.eu)

Examples of calls are:

Better financing models for health systems, Pre-clinical development of the next generation of immunotherapies for diseases or disorders with unmet medical needs, Development of new effective therapies for rare diseases, developing the next generation of vaccines, Boosting mental health in Europe in times of change and Prevention of obesity throughout the life course to highlight a few.

HRB Postdoctoral Internship Programme 2021

The HRB Post-doctoral Internship Programme aims to provide early career researchers with a PhD or MSc the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of working in a state agency, alongside experienced research management professionals. To apply to this Programme applicants must have the support of a HRB approved HI and an institutional sponsor. The deadline for applications is on 28 October at 15.00 and the interviews will be around the 10 of November.

National Integrated PhD Programme for Medical Practitioners 2022

This is a targeted funding initiative to support a structured national PhD programme to enable integrated clinical and research training for medical practitioners. Building on the existing HRB-Wellcome-funded Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) programme, the HRB will invite the  current ICAT Co-directors to lead an application, on behalf of key stakeholders and partners, to seek funding for a further phase of investment from the HRB. The aim of this investment is to continue supporting a diverse, multidisciplinary, collaborative, all-Ireland, integrated clinical academic programme. The application process opened in mid-October with a deadline for submission on 22 of December. The application will be subject to international panel review.

US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership Programme

EU4Health

Action grants:

13 calls for proposals for action grants was launched worth up to €44million. Projects in areas such as health data, healthy lifestyles, mental health, cancer and genomics will be supported under these calls. Deadline for submission is 25th Jan 2022. Full details on each call can be found in the call document.

Prizes:

The 2021 EU Health Award has also launched earlier this month and it covers two topics (see flyers attached):

  • Cancer prevention: rewarding initiatives of cities, NGOs or other civil society organisations, and educational institutions seeking to promote communication and health literacy on cancer prevention among children and young people (from 6 to 24 years old).
  • Mental health: rewarding community-based initiatives alleviating the mental health impact of COVID-19.

The deadline for this award is the 30 November 2021. All further details on the prizes, criteria as well as the award rules are available on the EU Health Award website.

Procurement:

The first wave of tenders  is open for submission. The submission deadline for these three tenders is the 29th Oct 2021.  The tenders include preparatory actions to support the establishment of the new Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). More information can be found on the Tenders Electronic Daily (TED) website TED home – TED Tenders Electronic Daily (europa.eu)

The call for proposals for the Applied Partnership Awards (APA) 2022 will launch in January 2022. Further details will follow.

Summer Student Scholarship 2022

The Summer Student Scholarships support undergraduate students in health or social care-related disciplines to complete short research projects during the summer. Subject to Board approval the 2022 call will open on 16 November with a deadline for applications on 20 January 2022.

EU4Health

The second wave of calls for proposals are due to be launched on the 14th Oct 2021 with a deadline of 25th Jan 2022. There are 17 calls to be launched, 10 of which are cancer related actions. Please see EU4Health Programme    for further details.

HRCI/HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2022

This scheme funds internationally competitive and innovative research in areas of strategic relevance to HRCI-registered research charities. Those interested in this scheme should contact HRCI for further information. Participating charity calls are now open and listed on the HRCI Open Calls page . Applicants should contact the relevant charity for their specific call details and deadlines for submission for charity endorsement. Further information and instructions for both charities and applicants can be found on the HRB grants page. 

SFI-HRB-Wellcome Research Partnership

To support their new strategy, Wellcome is changing the way they support scientific research. A new range of discovery research funding schemes has been launched and these will open for applications in late summer 2021.All current Wellcome funding schemes will close during 2021. Please check relevant scheme pages for final application deadlines. 

DOROTHY COFUND Programme

The Health Research Board, in collaboration with the Irish research Council (IRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and co-funded by the European Union, is working towards the forthcoming launch of the DOROTHY COFUND programme. Fellowships will have an international outgoing phase of 18 months, followed by a return phase to Ireland of 18 months. DOROTHY is open to applicants from all nationalities are Experienced Researcher (ER), provided they haven’t resided in the outgoing phase country for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the call deadline. It is open to all disciplines, provided that their research topic relates to public health crises. The call is envisaged to launch in Q4 2021 and will be managed by IRC.
