Collaborative Doctoral Awards in Patient-focused Research (CDA) 2018: Stage one is now completed.  An international multidisciplinary panel discussed the 41 pre-applications during September and ten applications were invited to stage two. All the applicants have been notified. The submission deadline for full applications is Friday 17 November 2017. Following international peer review, a two-day interview meeting will take place on 22 and 23 January 2018. The HRB Board is expected approve the recommendation of the Interview Panel on 23 February 2018

Applying Research into Policy & Practice Postdoctoral Fellowship (ARPP): The launch of this scheme is deferred to 8 January 2018. These individual fellowships are designed to build capability and leadership potential of researchers who will help reduce the gap between research findings and health policy and/or clinical practice. Academic researchers or in-practice healthcare and health policy professionals can apply under two different streams. The full guidance notes can be found in the link below.

NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention 2018: As part of the 2017 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board, in association with the National Cancer Institute in the US and the HSC R&D Office in Northern Ireland, will invite applications for the prestigious NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention programme. Applications are invited from health-related researchers and practitioners working in the Republic of Ireland who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. Applicants can apply for one or both of these courses. The two courses offered are:

  • Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control (9 July – 3 August 2018) 
  • Molecular Prevention (6 – 10 August 2018).

Applications for the 2018 courses will be open by mid- November 2017.

Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2019: The second round of the DIFA scheme will be launched on 1 November 2017. A pre-application stage is being introduced into the call. Eligible pre-applications will be short listed by an international review panel. A selected number of applicant teams will be invited to full application stage. The Lead Applicant will have the opportunity to make revisions from pre-application to full application stage especially if addressing the panel feedback from the pre-application stage. As previously, full applications will undergo a two-stage assessment process.

Summer Student Scholarship 2018: The Summer Student Scholarships aims to support undergraduate students in a health or social care-related discipline by funding their participation in research for up to 8 weeks during the summer months in 2018. The purpose of the student scholarships is to encourage an interest in research and to give the student an opportunity to become familiar with some research techniques. The call will be open to undergraduate students who are studying in a health or social care-related discipline at a university/third level institute in Ireland but not in the first or final year of their degree course and who have not previously received a Summer Student Scholarship from the HRB. The scheme will open at the end of November 2017 and applications must be made online through the HRB GEMS online system

Capacity Building in Evidence Synthesis (CBES) 2018: The HRB and the HSC R&D Division now invite applications which propose a new model for delivering capacity building initiatives in evidence synthesis.  The proposed model should include a range of activities to promote and support capacity building for evidence synthesis.  While this may include some current Cochrane activities, it is expected that the successful team will deliver a broad suite of training courses and other initiatives that will support evidence synthesis employing a range of methodologies (e.g. rapid reviews, umbrella reviews, narrative reviews, scoping reviews, realist reviews). The successful applicants will be expected to take over the networking, knowledge exchange and dissemination activities of Cochrane Ireland with the aim to revise and develop these as relevant. Applications will close 7 February 2018

MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme: The MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme enables MRCG-registered research charities to support research of particular interest to specific patient populations. The scheme provides funding for research projects in disease areas that are of strategic relevance to individual MRCG-registered research charities. Between now and December, participating charities will open calls for proposals through their respective websites/communications channels. Fulbright-HRB HealthImpact Awards: The Fulbright Commission and the Health Research Board are offering a unique opportunity for an Irish Professional with 5 years or more experience to travel to the U.S. to undertake research or professional development in any area of Health.
