Cancer Prevention Fellowship Programme: The outcome of the 2016/2017 selection process carried out by NCI will be approved by the HRB Board on 7 April 2017. The next round of the call will open around May 2018. (The precise date is unknown at this point in time.)  

Emerging Investigator Awards for Health 2017: 57 eligible applications are currently undergoing international peer-review. A number of candidates will be shortlisted in mid-April and invited for interview by an international panel. The Panel interview will take place at the HRB offices in Dublin on 22, 23, 24 of May with the final HRB Board approval expected at the end of June.

Fulbright-HRB HealthImpact Award: Eight applicants were interviewed for this award in February 2017 and four will be awarded. Candidates have been informed by the Fulbright Commission.

Investigator Led Projects 2017: Applicants were informed on Wednesday 29th March if they have been shortlisted for the next stage of the Investigator Led Projects Funding Scheme. Successful applicants who proceed to the second stage, will have 10 working days to respond to reviewers comments. Responses will have a maximum word count of 2,000 words.

Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme (KEDS) 2017:  The KEDS awards are targeted at current HRB grant holders with the aim of accelerating the translation of research findings into policy and practice.  This is a invited call to all eligible grant holders that meet the following criteria:

  • The award must be active as of the 1 March 2017 and
  • Have an end of grant date of 15 December 2017 or later

PPI Ignite Awards 2017 – Supporting Public and Patient Involvement in Research: The PPI Ignite call, aimed at kick starting the capacity of the Irish research system to meaningfully involve the public and patients in research, is now closed.  An international panel will evaluate the submitted proposals on the 26 April 2017 and the panel recommendations will be tabled at the HRB Board in May 2017. Applicants will be informed of the outcome shortly after that Board meeting.

Summer Student Scholarship 2017: 142 applications were received by the closing date. The review process is now completed and applicants will be informed of the outcome after the HRB Board meeting on 7 April 2017.

New / Soon to open award schemes

Collaborative Doctoral Awards in Patient-focused Research (CDA) 2018: As we mentioned in our previous ezine, this is our new structured approach to PhD education in the clinical space and will launch around mid-April 2017. The Collaborative Doctoral Awards aim to support excellent doctoral training programmes in patient-focused research, ensuring the expertise to advance, apply and transfer knowledge from clinical research into clinical application. Each Collaborative Doctoral Award will provide funding up to a maximum value of €1.5m for five years, to support the training and the research projects of three to five trainees. The HRB hopes to make three of these awards in this round.

ERA-HDHL call for Expressions of Interest for ‘Effectiveness of existing policies for lifestyle interventions – Policy Evaluation Network (PEN).  This call is for an Expression of Interest from individual researchers or research groups to participate in a full proposal for the Policy Evaluation Network. The closing date for applications is 31 March 2017.

JPI MYBL Joint Transnational Call for Proposals (2017) for ‘Ageing and Place in a digitising world’: The Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) ‘More Years, Better Lives – The Potential and Challenges of Demographic Change’ seeks to enhance coordination and collaboration between European and national research programmes related to demographic change. The third round of this call was launched in January and applications close on 3 April 2017.  Check the grant notice on the HRB website.

Applied Partnership Awards (APA) 2017 First Peer Review Cycle:  The APA 2017 call is currently open, and will remain open until 15 September 2017. 

There are two peer review cycles with the first peer review cycle closing on the 28 April 2017.  It is anticipated that successful applicants from the first peer review cycle with be notified of the outcome in October 2017. 

The second peer review cycle will close on the 15 September 2017 and successful applicants will be notified in April 2018.

The overarching aim of the Applied Partnership Awards is to support high quality applied research projects through research partnerships between academic researchers and knowledge users in policy and practice.  The research projects should target research that will support the work of healthcare policy and service delivery partners.
