For the past 12 years the HRB and the National Federation for Voluntary Bodies have organised an art competition to choose the cover of the National Intellectual Disability database (NIDD) annual report. This year we expanded the competition and chose a second piece of artwork to be used for the cover of the National Physical and Sensory Disability Database (NPSDD) annual report.

Each year this competition continues to meaningfully connect the data collected by the HRB to the people and services who provide it.

‘The talent on display was astounding, breath-taking to be honest. And knowing that they were submitted by people with intellectual disabilities made it even more poignant’, said Ms Anne Doyle, one of the judges and a Research Analyst at the HRB.

’The judges were determined that this would be no ordinary competition and that the winning entries should be chosen not just for the talent and flair but for the effort and energy that went into the creation.

The entries were whittled down to 10, then 4, and finally 2 … The winners.

John Murphy’s ‘Emerald Forest‘ was selected as the cover of the National Intellectual Disability Database Annual Report 2016.  All of the judges were drawn towards it. 

And a spectacular array of colours, shapes and elements including feathers, shells and glitter, made up Olga Forde’s entry, ‘Under the Sea’ which the judges felt was perfect for drawing attention to the National Physical and Sensory Disability Database Annual Report 2016‘.

Both reports were simultaneously launched on 21 June by Minister Finian McGrath T.D., Minister of State for Disability Issues.

The launch was held in St. Michael’s House, where John attends services. John’s proud parents attended with him while Olga travelled from Galway Brothers of Charity services with family and friends. Both were awarded trophies, cheques and their professionally framed winning artwork by Minister McGrath.
