Public and patient involvement in research

Public and patient involvement (PPI) in research means that the public and patients are involved in planning and doing research from start to finish and help tell the public about the results of research.

It represents an active partnership between members of the public and patients and researchers in the decision making about research.

The HRB strategy 2021-2025 is committed to PPI. We support PPI both within the HRB and through HRB-supported projects and programmes.

You will find information on how we currently support PPI below.

PPI in grant applications

The HRB promotes the active involvement of members of the public and patients in the research that we fund. This starts with determining what exactly the research wants to find out, so it is important for grant applicants to consider PPI from the earliest stages when planning their research. We welcome PPI contributors as co-applicants. Applicant teams are asked to describe any public involvement in their research throughout the various stages of the research cycle.

Our PPI information for grant applicants webpage contains further information on what to consider when it comes to PPI.

PPI support for researchers

To support the development of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI)in Ireland, the Health Research Board together with Research Ireland fund the PPI Ignite Network. The Network is based at seven Universities in Ireland, each of which provide co-funding too, with a National Programme Office at NUI Galway. There are ten national partners and fifty-three local partners, mostly community groups and charities.

PPI Ignite helps Institutions create the right environment, training, support and processes to support researchers engage public and patients in their research from the start. Information on what the network does to support PPI in research can be found on their  website.

Public review of grant applications

The HRB invites public reviewers to comment on the quality of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in grant applications. Reviews are written from the perspective of a member of the public or informed by their knowledge and experience as a patient, carer and/or user of health services. This is in addition to feedback on the scientific aspects from international peer-reviewers.

The HRB works with a group of public reviewers who have signed up to review grant applications. Are you interested in becoming a reviewer? We would love to hear from you. We provide further information on what public review involves on our webpage.
