Outputs, outcomes and emerging impacts: Results from HRB awards completed in 2016/2017
This report presents a snapshot of, and provides trend analysis over 10 years for, the outputs, outcomes and some emerging impacts from 187 HRB awards (combined value of €47.2 million) that completed in 2016 and 2017. It demonstrates that HRB-funded researchers are highly productive across a wide range of metrics including scientific dissemination, capacity-building, policy and clinical practice influences, and health sector and economic benefits, with increases in many metrics over the last 10 years.
In line with the HRB’s strategic objective to ‘generate relevant knowledge and promote its application in policy and practice’ the report found a significant increase in engagement with policy makers, healthcare providers and decision-makers, patient groups and the public, as well as significant collaborations with these key stakeholders.
For the first time ever, the amount of additional research funding leveraged by HRB researchers exceeded the original HRB investment in their awards and reflects Irish health researchers increased success in winning funding from EU Framework and other national and international funding programmes.
This evaluation will inform HRB funding strategy and decisions relating to both new or existing funding initiatives. It also helps us to understand whether the schemes we invest in are meeting their scientific objectives and whether HRB-supported researchers are placing their research evidence where it has the most potential to impact policy development, practice improvement and healthcare innovation.
