European Web Survey on Drugs 2024: Irish Results
The 2024 European Web Survey on Drugs (EWSD) took place across 35 European countries,
including Ireland, from May to July 2024. The objective of the 2024 EWSD was to determine
patterns of drug use among a convenience sample of people aged 18 years and over in
Ireland who have used drugs in the past year. As the EWSD sample is a non-probability
convenience sample, it is important to note that this survey cannot provide population drug
use prevalence data, and we cannot assume that the findings are representative of the drug
using population in Ireland. In total, 2,406 eligible participants in Ireland took part in the
EWSD, of whom 63.1% were male and 35.7% were female. The mean age of respondents
was 32.1 years, and the median age was 30 years. Three-quarters (74.5%) were employed,
15.9% were students, and 3.5% were unemployed. The most common ethnicity was White
Irish (83.9%), followed by any other White background (11.4%). Just 3.1% of respondents had
received treatment for drug use in the last year.
