The call for applications, which goes live today targets health and care practitioners at post-doctoral level and it is also open to people currently working outside Ireland. It will allow protected time for research and will also backfill clinical time so that patient service levels are not affected.

According to Annalisa Montesanti, Programme Manager at the HRB,

‘We want create the opportunity for health and care practitioners to develop research skills and competencies and establish themselves as independent investigators while still managing their clinical commitments.

The Emerging Clinical Investigator Award will let them do that'.

The €5 million investment will support up to five awards. Each award will buy out 40-50% of lead applicant time and have a maximum value of €1 million, including overheads. Application for the award is a two-stage process. Stage 1 opens on 11 March and closes on 16 May 2019.

This new scheme is part of a revised approach by the HRB to support a specific research career path for health and care practitioners.
