The Health Research Board (HRB) hosted an information webinar this week in partnership with Enterprise Ireland (EI) to help Irish researchers navigate the funding opportunities available within the new Horizon Europe Health Programme

Opening the event, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly encouraged Irish researchers to consider the opportunities presented in the new funding programme. Most notably, the potential to advance Irish health research and create synergies across Europe to tackle shared health challenges that one nation alone cannot overcome.

Representatives from the HRB and EI, as well as European funding experts, provided direction on key areas of the programme and guidance on how to compete for funding. Attendees also heard from funding recipients under the Horizon 2020 programme, who shared their experiences and insights of leading or participating in a successful EU funding partnership.

Horizon Europe Health

With a budget of €7.7 billion for health research, the health programme will focus on helping citizens stay healthy in a rapidly changing society by promoting positive health behaviours as well as transforming the healthcare system. The programme sits within the broader Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, the biggest ever undertaken in Europe with a budget of €95 billion for a multidisciplinary programme that will run until 2027.

Role of the HRB

The HRB will play a lead role in delivering the health research agenda for Horizon Europe; contributing to the policy agenda and creating awareness, as well as supporting the Irish health research community to compete for funding. Working jointly with the National Support Network through Enterprise Ireland, our focus and commitment is to support health researchers to compete and continue to be successful in Horizon Europe Health. European and international collaboration and engagement is a strategic priority for the HRB which will be taken forward in Horizon Europe through dedicated research and innovation funding calls, a Mission in Cancer and EU co-funded partnerships.
