Shorter hospital stays for older people in areas with better supply of home care and residential care services
New research published today by the Economic and Social Research Institute, and funded by the HRB, analysed how care supply within hospital (hospital beds) and outside of the hospital affects hospital duration of stay.

The report entitled ‘An Analysis of the Effects on Irish Hospital Care of the Supply of Care Inside and Outside the Hospital‘ is the second report from a project that aims to provide evidence on the supply of care in the community and to inform policies, such as Sláintecare, that aim to move care from acute hospitals to the community.
It found a clear link between older patients’ hospital stay duration and the supply of home care and long-term residential care in their area. Improving home care and residential care can in part help reduce hospital stays for some patients.
Speaking about the report, Darrin Morrissey, Chief Executive of the Health Research Board says,
‘This report reinforces the importance of having research to inform decision making around health in order to ensure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time’.
