Applied Programme Grants Scheme (APRO) 2023
33 applications were received by the 6 April closing date. 30 applications passed initial eligibility checking and are now undergoing international peer review.
Fulbright-HRB Health Impact Award 2023
Three awards were made under the 2023 round of this scheme. A formal announcement for all Fulbright awardees 2023 will be made in June.
Applied Partnership Awards 2022 (APA) Cycle 2
The call for applications for Cycle 2 closed on 1 February. 21 applications for APA Cycle 2 are now undergoing review and the panel meeting will be held in late June.
Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP) 2023 Cycle 1
All shortlisted SDAP 2023 Cycle 1 applications following peer and public reviews have been further reviewed by the SDAP International Panel Reviewers on 18 May 2023. Selected applications for funding are being forwarded to the HRB board for approval. All applications will be notified of the outcome and associated feedback at the end of June 2023.
HRB Postdoctoral Fellowships: Applying Research into Policy & Practice (ARPP) 2023
The HRB received 11 applications. The applications, of which all were eligible, are currently undergoing international peer-review and the outcome will be announced in mid-June. The international panel interviews will be conducted on 5-6 September.
HRB Postdoctoral Fellowships: Clinician Scientist Fellowships (CSF) 2023
The HRB received 18 applications. The applications, which were all eligible, are currently undergoing international peer-review and the outcome will be announced in mid-June. The international panel interviews will be conducted on 29-30 August.
Joint Transnational Calls (JTCs)
- JPND Working Group JTC2022: Proposals are under evaluation. Coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q3 2023.
- EJPRD JTC2023: Evaluation of pre-proposals is complete and coordinators have been informed of the outcome.
- JPND JTC2023: Evaluation of pre-proposals is complete and coordinators have been informed of the outcome.
- ERA-NET NEURON JTC2023: Evaluation of pre-proposals is complete and coordinators have been informed of the outcome.
- JPI AMR JTC2023: Evaluation of pre-proposals is complete and coordinators have been informed of the outcome.
- ERA4Health JTC2023: Full proposals are under evaluation. Coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q4 2023.
Open Calls
Doctoral Training Programme in Precision Medicine in Cancer (PMC) 2023
Under the auspices of the Ireland-Northern Ireland-National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium, the HRB and the HSC R&D Division in NI will be supporting a Doctoral Training Programme in Precision Medicine in Cancer (PMC) to build capacity and scale in precision medicine research in cancer on the island of Ireland to inform advances in cancer services North and South for the benefit of patients. This is a targeted call with one award to be made to enhance and expand an existing programme between Queens University, Belfast (QUB) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), U.S. This award is expected to include Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in both the North and South of Ireland as well as the NCI. The HRB is the leading agency for this call. The application deadline is 9 June 2023.
Patient Safety Research Network (PSRN) 2023
Please Note: The closing date for applications has been extended to 31 May 2023.
The aim of the PSRN is to bring together all relevant stakeholders to promote and advance Patient Safety research in Ireland. All interested applicants should contact the Lead Knowledge User Organisation, the HSE National Quality and Patient Safety Directorate (NQPSD), to express their interest in participating in a potential application (QPSI@hse.ie).
Rare Diseases Research and Innovation Catalyst Awards (RDCat) 2023
The call opened on 25 April and will close on 27 June. One application should be made on behalf of a consortium of individuals and organisations, that is representative of a national endeavour and can credibly lead this initiative on behalf of the Irish rare disease research community, including representation of the ERN clinical sites. Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP) 2023 Cycle 2
The scheme remains open for applications for Cycle 2, the closing date is 4 October 2023. The scheme supports bringing together researchers, knowledge users and data controllers to develop research projects that answer policy and/or practice-relevant questions through the use of secondary data.

HRB Rapid Response Mechanism to support Ukrainian researchers in crisis 2022 (Ucrisis 2022)
The grant scheme supports a named individual/s who have been displaced by the Russian invasion in Ukraine or who cannot return to Ukraine due to the invasion (and are being supported by the Irish Government under the Temporary Protection Directive). It is a rolling grant call with continuous intake and fast-tracked application review.

Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS) Healthcare of the future
This call is part of the new European Partnership, THCS. The deadline for the mandatory intent to apply has now passed. The deadline for full proposals is 13 June 2023.

Emerging Clinician Scientist Awards (ECSA) 2024
Update: The 2024 round of Emerging Clinician Scientist Awards will now be launched in September 2023.
The scheme targets health and social care practitioners from any professional background who are involved in the delivery of patient or social care, research active, are ready to transition towards research independence, and can facilitate actionable knowledge in health research. Emerging Investigator Awards (EIA) 2024
Update: The 2024 round of Emerging Investigator Awards will now be launched in September 2023.
The scheme targets academic postdoctoral researchers from different disciplines who are ready to transition towards research independence and can facilitate actionable knowledge in health research. Further details are in the Guidance Notes.
