Applied Partnership Awards (APA) 2016 Second Peer Review Cycle: The outcome of the international review process was presented to the HRB Board on 24th February. Applicants will be notified in the coming weeks.
Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2017: The outcome of the international review process was presented to the HRB Board on 24th February. Applicants will be notified in the coming weeks.
Emerging Investigator Awards for Health 2017: 57 eligible applications are currently undergoing international peer-review. A number of candidates will be shortlisted in mid-April and invited for interview by an international panel. The Panel interview will take place at the HRB offices in Dublin on 22, 23, 24 of May with the final HRB Board approval expected at the end of June.
Fulbright-HRB Health Impact Award: Eight applicants were interviewed for this award in February 2017. The final decisions will be announced by the Fulbright Commission sometime in March.
NCI summer curriculum in cancer prevention 2017: The HRB supports travel and subsistence costs for some Irish participants of two summer courses on cancer prevention run by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda. This year three candidates have been selected for the four-week course on ‘Principles and practice of cancer prevention’ and six candidates for the one-week course on ‘Molecular prevention’. These courses will take places at the NCI in Bethesda in July and August 2017.
Summer Student Scholarship 2017: 142 applications were received by the closing date. The review process has just started and applicants will be informed of the outcome after the HRB Board meeting on 7 April 2017.
New / Soon to open award schemes
Collaborative Doctoral Awards in Patient-focused Research (CDA) 2018: This is our new structured approach to PhD education in the clinical space and will launch around mid-April 2017. The Collaborative Doctoral Awards aim to support excellent doctoral training programmes in patient-focused research, ensuring the expertise to advance, apply and transfer knowledge from clinical research into clinical application. Each Collaborative Doctoral Award will provide funding up to a maximum value of €1.5m for five years, to support the training and the research projects of a cohort of three to five trainees. The HRB hopes to make three of these awards in this round.

Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme (KEDS) 2017: These awards provide supplementary funding for current HRB award holders to develop and implement knowledge exchange and dissemination activities to accelerate the impact of their research on policy and practice. The next round for funding applications under this call is expected to launch in mid-March 2017.
SPHeRE programme: Applications for the 2017/18 scholars intake have just opened at the HRB-funded SPHeRE programme. This is a four-year programme that leads to a PhD in Population Health and Health Services Research (PHHSR). The Programme is a joint initiative of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork, with funded scholars having the option to also register at University College Dublin, NUI Galway, Maynooth University, University of Limerick or Dublin City University.

ERA-HDHL call for Expressions of Interest for ‘Effectiveness of existing policies for lifestyle interventions – Policy Evaluation Network (PEN). The second joint action call under the JPI HDHL launches today, 28 February 2017. This call is for an Expression of Interest from individual researchers or research groups to participate in a full proposal for the Policy Evaluation Network. PPI Ignite Awards 2017 – Supporting Public and Patient Involvement in Research: The PPI Ignite call aims to kick start the capacity of the Irish research system to meaningfully involve patients and members of the public in research and the call will close on 1 March 2017. An international panel will evaluate the submitted proposals in April 2017 and the panel recommendations will be tabled at the HRB Board in May 2017. Applicants will be informed of the outcome shortly after that Board meeting.
JPI MYBL Joint Transnational Call for Proposals (2017) for ‘Ageing and Place in a digitising world’: The Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) ‘More Years, Better Lives – The Potential and Challenges of Demographic Change’ seeks to enhance coordination and collaboration between European and national research programmes related to demographic change. The third round of this call was launched in January and applications close on 3 April 2017. Check the grant notice on the HRB website.
Paternity Leave Policy
Following the introduction of the Paternity Leave and Benefit Act 2016 the HRB will be providing two weeks paid paternity leave to eligible individuals in receipt of a salary provided by a HRB award from September 1st 2016. For more information please find a copy of the updated policy at;
