This application seeks to create a documentary on public and patient involvement (PPI) in Clinical Trials, with a focus on diabetes clinical trials. The goal is to engage more people in all aspects of Clinical Trials. PPI involves those affected by trial results in planning and decision-making, significantly influencing trial design, protocols, and communication.
PPI is research conducted with or by patients and the public, not merely about them. PPI Clinical Trials need broader participation to avoid overburdening a few and to fully represent the diverse populations affected by diabetes. Increased PPI involvement ensures that research benefits all people living with diabetes. Since 2021, the network has collaborated with our networks PPI group to share insights and experiences. This collaboration, along with international diabetes stakeholder groups and the James Lind Alliance, led to a refresh of the Top 10 T1D research priorities defined by the community, to be published soon.
The network aims to produce a 25-minute documentary and a promotional trailer through the Science on Screen program at the University of Galway. The program has produced eight documentaries, reaching over 1.5 million people globally, broadcast nationally, screened at 17 film festivals, and won six international awards. This documentary is expected to effectively raise awareness of clinical trial PPI involvement and encourage more participation.
The documentary will launch at public events nationwide, featuring Q&A sessions and opportunities to join clinical trial PPI panels. The long-term plan includes screening the documentary at various public venues, promoting PPI and diabetes clinical trial involvement in Ireland and abroad.
