The barriers and facilitating factors associated with childhood vaccination uptake rates among migrant, refugees, and displaced parents: A mixed methods systematic review

Introduction

Migration and displacement bring many complexities that can result in migrants, refugees and other displaced populations experiencing disproportionately high levels of various determinants and risk factors for poor health (WHO, 2023). Approximately, 108.4 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide by the end of 2022 and children under the age of 18 constitute 40% (United Nations, 2022). Demographically, those identified at risk of severe health consequences due to under-vaccination or no vaccination are immigrant and migrant children. (Sana et al., 2023). Multiple factors contributed to low vaccination uptake and as migrants are a heterogenous population group varying across countries, it is essential to identify the barriers and facilitating factors associated with childhood vaccination uptake rates among migrant, refugee, and displaced parents to inform policy and increase childhood vaccination uptake rates to reduce the burden of vaccine preventable diseases in this population.

Inclusion and Exclusion

This mixed methods systematic review will include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods primary research studies that investigate the barriers and facilitators associated with childhood vaccination uptake rates among migrant, refugee, and displaced parents. No limits will be applied to publication date. The initial search will not be limited to English language however, this criterion might be applied at full text screening.

Methods

This mixed methods systematic review will follow the Joanna Briggs (JBI) methodology for mixed methods systematic review. MEDLINE Ovid, EMBASE Ovid, Cinahl (EBSCO Host), PsycINFO (Ovid) and Scopus will be electronically searched for primary studies. Grey literature will also be considered. Critical appraisal and data extraction will be performed using the JBI standardized tools, followed by data transformation. Data synthesis will follow the convergent integrated approach.
