Supporting PPI Yields more Impactful Research and Research Dissemination

The active grant’s research output will be improved by enhanced PPI funding and PPI involvement in the research programme. Our application seeks support for additional PPI public engagement opportunities to increase previously planned PPI activities. Further support will facilitate more meaningful PPI co-production of new knowledge and enhanced dissemination to the general public.

This Knowledge Translation Award proposal is made through co-production with our PPI partners. We want to fund more PPI to improve knowledge dissemination:

Travel and Accommodation budget: Three of our five PhDs live outside Dublin and rely on public transport to attend events, workshops and conferences. As an example, one of our PhD and PPI collaborators were invited to HRB’s annual PPI in Mental Health Research conference at University Cork College. The active grant could not afford this spend and so these PPI could not attend this event designed by them by their own funder (HRB). This experience is not unique and is outlined purely to clarify the challenges in this constantly evolving area.

Kick-off, check-in and wrap up meetings: These meetings would allow us to meet in person and capture any attitude or systems changes in regards to increased PPI collaboration through interview and surveys.

Modest equipment allowance: Without a laptop, PPI collaborators may miss chances to sign up for courses or attend online meetings.

Increase research training: The KTA would give funds to spend on research training to enhance knowledge flow between PhDs and PPIs.

Childcare: The active grant has no scope for childcare. This is now amended to facilitate diversity, inclusion and enhanced knowledge transfer.

Dissemination: The active grant has received several invitations to speak at engagements at mental health retreats, and schools, but could not be afforded. This will be amended and will improve the knowledge transfer of our results of our studies.
