Reel Ageing: Exploring TILDA Research Through Social Media Videos

The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) is a pioneering study examining the health and lives of older adults in Ireland. In 2009, TILDA recruited over 8,000 adults aged 50+, with an additional 2,000+ in 2022. Participants are surveyed every two years about their ageing experiences, with health monitored through several measures, including biomarkers like cholesterol. In 2024, TILDA will collect the seventh round of data from the 2009 cohort and the second round from the 2022 cohort.

Traditionally, scientific findings have been communicated through journal articles, conferences, and media stories. With over four billion users globally, social media is a powerful platform to reach diverse audiences. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) cater to various age groups, but videos are the most effective means across all channels, providing an immersive experience, allowing viewers to engage with researchers and share content widely.

We propose developing a series of short, dynamic videos to make complex research on ageing accessible and engaging. These videos will target both older adults interested in health and younger audiences who may not actively seek this information. Our goal is to dispel negative connotations of ageing and promote accurate, positive information, fostering a healthier attitude towards ageing. To achieve this, we will collaborate with researchers, subject matter experts, and TILDA’s Participant and Public Involvement (PPI) group to distil findings into clear messages, using cutting edge creative tools for visual appeal. Interaction will be encouraged through online polls, challenges, and question and answer sessions. We will track engagement metrics and gather feedback to refine content, ensuring it effectively raises awareness and understanding of ageing-related issues.

With public involvement and engagement central to informing our content, leveraging social media will ensure TILDA’s research has widespread impact, driving positive societal change and improving health outcomes for all.
