Postgraduate Immersion Day 2025: Fostering the Future in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This postgraduate immersion workshop aims to offer Junior Doctors in Intern/Senior House Officer years, that have an interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G), firsthand insight into the multifaceted areas of clinical research and surgical skills involved within the specialty and to demonstrate the diverse nature and opportunities within the various subspecialties.

The Rotunda Hospital is a unique institution that has provided an unbroken record of service to women and babies since its foundation in 1745. In partnership with our academic and research partner, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, we propose the development of a novel collaboration to implement a clinically immersive program to re-imagine and expand current research on specialty exposure for Junior Doctors wishing to pursue hospital medicine.

During the one-day workshop, participants will attend cutting-edge research lectures delivered by world class academics focused on improving patient care pathways, policy and health outcomes for women and babies; have access to world-class simulated training models in the state-of-art RCSI York Street campus; and observe real-life clinical activities at the Rotunda Hospital facilitated by esteemed consultants in their respective fields (Urogynecology & Maternal Fetal Medicine etc).

The workshop will disseminate research on improvements to health outcomes, promote evidence-informed care pathways and help foster research career paths in Irish healthcare. We will also acknowledge the challenges facing Irish O&G training including the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical student’s clinical exposure and growing attrition rates at specialist training levels and provide opportunities to engage directly with current trainees and fellows working in O&G.

We aim to evaluate the impact of this immersive health research program on Junior doctors’ attitudes towards a future career in O&G training. We will achieve this via mixed methods survey analysis including pre- and post-survey assessments and a follow-up survey three months after the workshop.
