Ignite Insight: National Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in PhD Research Symposium

Ignite Insight: National Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in PhD Research Symposium

Date: 3rd October 2025

Background & Importance

PPI is defined as research conducted ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public, rather than ‘to,’ ‘about,’ or ‘for’ them. It is increasingly recognized as a vital element of health and social care-related PhD research. Providing training and support for PhD researchers, supervisors, and public contributors is essential to foster meaningful engagement and avoid tokenistic involvement.

Purpose & Content

This one-day symposium, part of the National PPI Festival (October 2025), is designed for PhD researchers, supervisors, and the public. The programme includes:
Two international keynote speakers—leading experts in PPI.
Short talks by researchers, supervisors, and PPI contributors, addressing key topics and showcasing practical involvement examples.
Interactive PPI workshops, providing hands-on learning opportunities
An Interactive Knowledge Café, providing networking opportunities and space for discussion.

Dissemination

A graphic harvester will create a digital infographic, complemented by event photography and an impact infographic, all shared via PPI Ignite Network websites and social media for future training use. A press release will be distributed through UCC Media, and a one-page summary will feature in key newsletters.
