Sepsis is a life-threatening medical condition which occurs when the body reacts abnormally to the presence of an infection, resulting in organ dysfunction. The second annual Irish National Sepsis Outcome Report reported that in 2016, Sepsis affected 3.4% of hospital inpatients and contributed to 25% of in-hospital deaths. Patients who undergo surgery who present with sepsis or develop sepsis while in hospital, have a higher mortality rate than those who have not had recent surgery. The aim of this project is to investigate the number of cases of sepsis on a surgical ward in Beaumont Hospital and to describe the subsequent management of these patients. Ultimately, the aim is to identify potentially modifiable risk factors that could prevent sepsis and/or management strategies to improve sepsis recognition and management in these patients.
