What is this event about? This one-day conference will bring together academic researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to tackle one of Ireland’s biggest healthcare challenges: people living with multiple chronic diseases at the same time, known as multimorbidity.
Why is this important? Over one million people in Ireland currently live with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and depression together. This number is growing rapidly as our population ages. Managing multiple conditions is complex, expensive, and often overwhelming for both patients and healthcare providers. Recent research shows that people with multiple conditions face significantly higher healthcare costs and more frequent hospital visits, while the health system struggles to provide coordinated care.
What will happen at the event? The conference will share the latest Irish and international research on multimorbidity, including findings from a recent James Lind Alliance study that identified the top 10 research priorities as chosen by patients, carers, and healthcare professionals. We will invite leading experts in this field to share their research findings and international advances in multimorbidity care.
Who will attend?
We expect 100 people including academic researchers, clinicians, health service managers, patients with multiple conditions, and representatives from the Department of Health and HSE.
How will we share the results?
All presentations will be made available online with permission from the guest speakers.
What difference will this make?
This conference will bring together key stakeholders to discuss how research evidence can be better translated into practice, with the goal of improving care for people with multiple conditions.
