Ethical and Patient-Centered AI Implementation in Developing Countries’ Healthcare: A Comparative Analysis

Background:

This research project focuses on exploring the implementation of AI in healthcare across developing countries. The primary objective is to compare these implementations with the Irish context, providing a global perspective. The study will be conducted at DCU, in collaboration with the ADAPT Centre. It involves engaging with experts from H2020 projects and St. James’ Hospital to assess the technical capabilities of AI and its ethical implications. Knowledge will be acquired through interviews, collaborations with researchers, and participatory studies.

Aims:

This research aims to examine frameworks and methodologies for addressing ethical considerations in AI implementation in healthcare. It seeks to heighten awareness while addressing biases, including those concerning people of color. Additionally, the study addresses the aspects of doctor-patient relationships and data privacy, ensuring comprehensive and inclusive AI integration.

Hypotheses:

Patient-centric AI implementation enhances acceptance, satisfaction, and overall effectiveness in healthcare applications.

Addressing bias enriches equitable AI implementation, nurturing trust across diverse populations.

The integration of AI in healthcare impacts doctor-patient communication dynamics, potentially reshaping interactions.

Patient trust in AI systems relies on perceived data privacy protections, underscoring the importance of transparent measures.

Main Objective:

Explore frameworks and methods for expressing ethical concerns regarding AI in healthcare.

Sub Objectives:

Investigate patient-centric AI’s impact on acceptance, satisfaction, and effectiveness.

Examine bias mitigation strategies for equitable AI implementation and trust-building.

Analyze AI’s influence on doctor-patient communication dynamics.

Explore the relationship between patient trust in AI and transparent data privacy measures.

Expected Establishments:

The anticipated outcome involves producing a research paper central to the project’s primary objective, which is to explore ethical and patient-centered AI implementation in healthcare. The paper will cover aspects such as enhancing awareness of patient-centric AI, strategies for bias mitigation, the impact of AI on doctor-patient dynamics, and the correlation between patient trust and transparent data privacy measures.
