Co-creation of multimedia educational material for healthcare professionals and patients to target antimicrobial resistance and over-use of antimicrobials for respiratory tract infections

Antimicrobial resistance (AmR) can weaken the effects of antimicrobials (e.g antibiotics), and often happens because antimicrobials are used when they are not needed. Respiratory tract infections can be caused by bacteria/viruses, but it can be difficult to tell the exact cause. Antibiotics, which kill bacteria, are often used inappropriately to treat viral respiratory tract infections.

We are developing a process where on-the-spot tests are available to patients from their healthcare professionals so they can understand the cause of the infection and ensure it is treated appropriately. We have developed best practice guidance, with a group of international experts and patients, for how the C-Reactive Protein on-the-spot tests should be used to manage respiratory tract infections. Within the guidance, the importance of good communication between healthcare professionals (i.e. general practitioners, community pharmacists) and patients is highlighted when using the test. We have also spoken to patients, who’ve noted a lack of awareness of AmR and the need for careful use of antibiotics amongst patients and the public.

The aim of this project is to raise awareness of AmR amongst patients and the public and to improve the communication between patients and healthcare professionals, especially when using the C-Reactive Protein on-the-spot tests when deciding how best to treat patients with respiratory tract infections.

We will work with patients and healthcare professionals to co-create educational material, including leaflets and short-form videos targeting (i) adults (ii) parents/carers of young children and (iii) healthcare professionals. All videos will be distributed on open access, online platforms (e.g. YouYube), and will be distributed to relevant patient and professional groups to ensure widespread distribution. Leaflets will be available for healthcare professionals to use during consultations and will contain a QR-code link to videos. We will measure the success of the material in several ways.
