Building Research Capacity in Ireland: The Role of the Research Nurse/Midwife

The Irish Research Nurse and Midwives Network (IRNM) was established in 2008 to support the educational and professional needs of Clinical Research Nurses and Midwives (CRNM) on the island of Ireland.

The CRNM, by definition is an expert member of the research delivery team, who specialises in the management and coordination of research studies, and care of research participants, with emphases on patient safety; protocol integrity and research process; regulatory and ethical compliance; data management; education and advocacy. CRNMs are instrumental in bridging the gap between clinical practice and research, ensuring the smooth conduct of research studies while prioritising patient safety and ethical considerations.

The conference’s target audience includes CRNMs, allied health professionals, academics partners, industry representatives, and key stakeholders within the Irish research ecosystem. By addressing the role of CRNMs in building research capacity, the conference aims to convey a nationwide message emphasising the significant role CRNM plays in contributing to a robust research infrastructure and the vital need for a stable secure workforce. Agenda items include strengthening the network of users within the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS) from the perspective of stakeholders, fostering collaboration, and opening communication channels. Additionally, the conference will highlight the pivotal role of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research. Exploring the lived experiences of patients involved with CRNMs and will provide insights into adapting practices, learning, and disseminating this knowledge within the research community.

This conference will promote the growth and resilience of the CRNM workforce in Ireland and as an enabler to building a strong foundation for research success and contributing to the advancement of healthcare Ireland.
