This event is the next step after two meetings on “Broken Systems and Too Little Money: How Will We Meet the Needs of Ageing People with an Intellectual Disability…” We’re bringing the right people into the room, decision-makers, services, and people with lived experience to agree what changes are needed and how we actually deliver them.
Living costs are rising, housing is scarce, care and support staff are difficult to recruit and retain, and demand for supports keeps growing. More people with intellectual disabilities are also living longer, and many want to stay in their own home, family home, independent living or a community group home. As health needs increase, supports don’t always follow in tandem. Families, and often ageing parents and siblings hit crisis point, and services end up firefighting. Providers are clear that current budgets can’t stretch to the extra staffing, specialist input and home adaptations needed to support ageing in place. With limited options, nursing home placement is becoming more common, yet there are real concerns about suitability, training and the loss of person-centred, community-based support.

- choose a set of actions that will make the biggest difference
- set out who leads, what the oversight looks like
- produce a short briefing that sets out the blueprint and the next steps
