DOROTHY Co-Fund Programme: Postdoctoral Fellowships in Public Health Crisis

DOROTHY (DevelOp interdisciplinaRy apprOaches to healTH crisis collaborativelY) COFUND is a postdoctoral research programme that is co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), the Irish Research Council (IRC), Health Research Board (HRB), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The IRC is the leading agency.

This is an interdisciplinary fellowship programme on the topic of public health crises and their legacies. Public health is defined as “the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society” (Acheson 1988; WHO). The public health approach is to promote better health and wellbeing in society as a whole, preventing illness through working across sectors. Challenges to public health include, but are not limited to, economic crises, inequalities, ageing populations, increasing levels of infectious and noncommunicable diseases and mental health problems, migration and urbanisation, and environmental damage and climate change. To this end, research is key to finding solutions to public health crises.
The 2023 call will be the second and last call under this Programme. The call is managed by the IRC.

Additional Information

In the 2023 call, up to 17 fellows may be recruited. Fellows will be recruited for 36-month projects by an Irish Higher Education Institution (HEI) or research performing organisation (RPO). The programme will assist fellows in accelerating their careers through excellent training and networking opportunities in the Irish and EU innovation ecosystem.

  • Fellows will be hosted in the first 18 months (outgoing phase) in a HEI/RPO outside Ireland.
  • In the following 18 months (return phase), fellows will be hosted in a HEI/RPO in Ireland.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to include a non-academic secondment (between 3 and 6 months) in their project, which can take place at any stage of the project.
