NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention 2020
Under the All-Ireland Cancer Consortium, the Health Research Board has the opportunity to provide access to two prestigious courses in cancer prevention at the National Cancer Institute in the United States of America (USA). This includes a four-week course on the principles and practice of cancer prevention, and a one-week course on molecular prevention. The HRB supports travel-related costs.

The All-Ireland Cancer Consortium aims to provide world-class cancer care to people on the island of Ireland and, to this end, participates in a range of educational programmes. As part of the 2020 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board, in association with the National Cancer Institute in the US and the HSC R&D Office in Northern Ireland, invites applications for the prestigious NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention programme.
The two available courses are:
- Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control 13 July – 7 August 2020. This four-week summer course provides specialized instruction in the principles and practice of cancer prevention and control. It focuses on concepts, issues, and applications related to this field. Participants will gain a broad-based perspective in terms of available resources, and scientific data.

- Molecular Prevention 10 – 14 August 2020. This one-week course on molecular aspects of cancer prevention provides a strong background in molecular biology and genetics of cancer and an overview of basic laboratory approaches applied to cutting-edge research in the fields of molecular epidemiology, chemoprevention, biomarkers, and translational research.

Both courses take place at the National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Maryland, USA. The HRB has access to a small number of places on each course, where no tuition fee will be charged. The HRB will provide funding towards accommodation costs; it will also pay a small daily subsistence allowance. Applicants can apply for one or both of these courses. The courses are not open to applicants from the Republic of Ireland who do not have HRB funding support.Close
- Who can apply?
Applications are invited from either health-related researchers and practitioners working in the Republic of Ireland who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. Applicants can apply for one or both courses.
Individuals currently conducting a PhD are eligible to apply but may not be competitive particularly for the Principles and Practice course.
Successful applicants are selected according to the following principles:
- Relevance of the course to their current job and ability to implement learning in professional role
- Ability to function as a multiplier and to disseminate information
- Appropriate career level
