Applied Partnership Awards 2022 (APA)

Cycle 1 of the Applied Partnership Awards (APA) 2022 closed on 27 of April. 20 applications were received. Eligibility checks are well under way, followed shortly by peer and public review of applications.

Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2023

56 eligible Pre-applications are currently under review by an international review Panel and applicants will received notification of the Panel review outcome in late June 2022. A selected number of applications will be invites to submit a Full application in July 2022.

JPI "A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life' (HDHL) Call (2022)

The deadline for pre-proposals was April 21st 2022. National eligibility checks are complete and eligible proposals are currently under evaluation.

European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) Joint Transnational Call (2022) 

The pre-proposal stage is complete and shortlisted consortia have been invited to submit to the full proposal stage. The deadline for submission is June 15th 2022. HRB are also participating in the widening process (further details under Open Calls).

 

HRCI/HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2022

34 eligible applications underwent panel review on May 5 and 6. The HRB Board will discuss panel recommendations on July 1 and applicants will be advised of outcome following this.

Investigator-Led Projects (ILP) 2022

70 short-listed applications are now undergoing panel review. Panel meetings will take place at the end of May and early June.

Emerging Investigator Awards for Health (EIA) 2022 

The Panel review phase is currently ongoing and face to face interviews with an international review panel will take place on 8 and 9 of June. The recommendations from the Panel will be discussed by the HRB Board in early July and the outcome will then communicated to HI and applicants.

 

Conference and Events Sponsorship Scheme (CES) 2022

15 health-research related conferences/events have been approved for funding by the HRB ET. All events will take place across Ireland over the next 18 months.

ERA PerMed Joint Transnational Call (2022)

The pre-proposal stage is complete and shortlisted consortia have been invited to submit to the full proposal stage. The deadline for submission is June 14th 2022. 

ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 Joint Transnational Call (2021)

Full proposals from successful consortia are currently undergoing evaluation and coordinators will be informed of the outcome at the end of June.

Research visits – Ulysses 2022

Decisions are expected in June 2022 and outcome will be communicated by IRC, who is managing the call.

Post-doctoral Internship Programme 2021 (round 2)

Thirteen applications were received by the HRB in April and all candidates were interviewed over two days. Four awards were made, and four additional candidates were placed in a supplementary panel to cover future relevant posts, if become available in the next six months. All candidates and relevant institutions have been notified.

Open Calls

Applied Partnership Awards 2022 (APA)

The 2022 call for proposals for Applied Partnership Awards (APA) remains open for Cycle 2 of this rolling call. The scheme supports applied research projects in which researchers and knowledge users come together to develop research projects that address a specific need within the Irish health or social care system. The closing date for submission to Cycle 2 is in February 2023.

Knowledge Translation Awards (KTA) 2022

The Knowledge Translation Awards (KTA) opened on May 10 to holders of existing, active HRB grants. The deadline for submission is 23 June. The scheme supports supplementary funding for knowledge translation activities not covered in the original grant that will maximise the potential impact of the research findings on policy or practice or communicate research and research findings to the general public. Please note this scheme was formerly named the Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme.

US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership Programme

HRB Rapid Response Mechanism to support Ukrainian researchers in crisis 2022 (Ucrisis 2022)

The Ucrisis 2022 supplementary grant call (restricted to eligible active grant awards) opened on 22 April 2022. The grant scheme supports a named individual/s who have been displaced by the Russian invasion in Ukraine or who cannot return to Ukraine due to the invasion (and are being supported by the Irish Government under the Temporary Protection Directive). It is a rolling grant call with continuous intake and fast-tracked application review.

ERA-Net JPIAMR-ACTION Transnational Network Call (2022)

The Joint Transnational Call “Diagnostics and Surveillance” launched April 12th 2022 with a deadline for submission of proposals of June 14th 2022.

DOROTHY COFUND Programme

The 2022 call for the DOROTHY COFUND Programme closed on 23 of May and 26 applications were received. IRC is the leading funding agency for this call which is co-funded with HRB and EPA. Eligibility of applications will be completed prior to starting peer-review.

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the EU's funding programme for research and innovation. The 2022 single stage calls closed on 21 April 2022. Results of the 1st stage of 2-stage calls 2022 calls which closed in February are now available. The Work Programme with calls for 2023/2024 is now in preparation and it is expected to be published towards the end 2022. Cancer Mission

EU Missions are an additional part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for 2021-2027 aiming to address some of the greatest challenges facing our society.  An online information event was held on 18 May 2022 on the Cancer Mission and the 2022 calls. Here are the slides

The 2022 calls launched on 24 May with a total budget €129.56 million and a closing date on 7 September 2022. Topics include Improving & Upscaling primary prevention of cancer through implementation research, Pragmatic clinical trials to optimise treatment for patients, Strengthen Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures, Towards the creation of a European Cancer Patient Digital Centre and Creation of National Mission Hubs Supporting the Mission on Cancer. The 2023 calls will have a possible closing date of Spring 2023.

EU4Health

The European Commission has launched a call to provide mental health and psychosocial support to displaced people from Ukraine. Funding of €2 million will support the exchange and implementation of best practices that will increase awareness, knowledge sharing and support for health professionals and NGOs working with refugees. Application deadline is 31st May 2022. For more details visit the call document.

€25Million is available under the 2021 EU4Health work programme for an action grant to support the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). The grant aims to establish a pilot network of top-class laboratories and research institutes with the expertise and capacities to support HERA in identifying emergent pathogens and ensuring the availability of medical countermeasures for improved health preparedness and response. Application deadline is 18th Aug 2022. For more details visit the call document.

First wave of 2022 calls:

The submission deadline for the first set of calls under the 2022 work programme is the 24th May 2022.  The total budget for these eight calls amounts to €107.3 million.  The calls focus on the following eight topics:  

  • Collation of Public Health knowledge on vaccination against COVID-19
  • prevention of NCDs – excluding cancer, cardiovascular diseases & diabetes
  • promoting mental health
  • implementation of innovative approaches to prostate, lung and gastric cancer screening at Union level
  • training clinical and patient experts for involvement in health technology assessment
  • increased capacity of notified bodies for medical devices
  • training for health workforce, including digital skills
  • guidance in the area of pricing through the EURIPID database

ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 Joint Transnational Call 2022

The Joint Transnational Call “Novel translational approaches to tackle the challenges of hard-to-treat cancers from early diagnosis to therapy” launched May 23rd 2022 with a deadline for submission of pre-proposals of 18th July 2022.

European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) Joint Transnational Call (2022) 

HRB are participating in the widening process which allows for an Irish research team to join existing consortia for submission to the full proposal stage. Please contact eujointprogrammes@hrb.ie to find out more information. The deadline for expressions of interest is May 27th 2022.
