Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2023

56 Pre applications were discussed at the Pre application Panel meeting held virtually on 09 & 10 June 2022. 29 Pre applications were shortlisted and invited to submit a Full Application. The closing date for submission of the Full Application is 15 September 2022.

JPI "A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life' (HDHL) Call (2022)

Proposals from are currently undergoing evaluation and coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q3/Q4 2022.

European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) Joint Transnational Call (2022) 

Full proposals from successful consortia are currently undergoing evaluation and coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q4 2022/Q1 2023.

Knowledge Translation Awards (KTA) 2022

The Knowledge Translation Awards (KTA) opened on May 10 to holders of existing, active HRB grants. The deadline for submission was 23 June. Eligible applications are currently undergoing review.

HRCI/HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2022

15 awards were approved by the HRB Board following the recommendations of the HRCI-HRB Joint Selection Panel. For this round of the call 88 applications were submitted to the co-funding charities and underwent the peer review and charity selection process. Of these, 34 eligible applications were submitted to the HRB and underwent panel review. The co-funding charities were recently informed of the outcomes.

Investigator-Led Projects (ILP) 2022

29 awards were approved by the HRB Board following the recommendations of the Patient Oriented Research (POR) and the Population Health and Health Services Research (PHR/HSR) Panels. For this round of ILP 2022, the HRB received a total of 120 applications from which 118 passed to the peer and public review phase, and 70 were shortlisted and discussed at Panel meeting. The overall success rate was 24%. The Lead Applicants and Host Institutions were recently informed of the outcome.

Emerging Investigator Awards for Health (EIA) 2022 

In early July the HRB Board approved the recommendation from the international Panel to make nine awards. 15 candidates were interviewed by the Panel and the nine awards were made out of 42 eligible applications to the 2022 EIA round.

Research visits – Ulysses 2022

Five awards were made by the HRB, and the outcome was communicated to the applicants by the IRC, who managed the call.

DOROTHY COFUND Programme

Peer-review is currently underway for the eligible applications received by IRC, who is the leading funding agency for this call, co-funded with HRB and EPA.

ERA PerMed Joint Transnational Call (2022)

Full proposals from successful consortia are currently undergoing evaluation and coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q3/Q4 2022.

Post-doctoral Internship Programme 2021 (round 2)

Thirteen applications were received by the HRB in April and all candidates were interviewed over two days. Four awards were made, and four additional candidates were placed in a supplementary panel to cover future relevant posts, if become available in the next six months. All candidates and relevant institutions have been notified.

ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 Joint Transnational Call 2022

The call closed on 18th July 2022 and pre-proposals currently undergoing evaluation. Coordinators will be informed of the outcome Q4 2022.

HRB Rapid Response Mechanism to support Ukrainian researchers in crisis 2022 (Ucrisis 2022)

The Ucrisis 2022 supplementary grant call (restricted to eligible active grant awards) opened on 22 April 2022. The grant scheme supports a named individual/s who have been displaced by the Russian invasion in Ukraine or who cannot return to Ukraine due to the invasion (and are being supported by the Irish Government under the Temporary Protection Directive). It is a rolling grant call with continuous intake and fast-tracked application review. The HRB has approved one application for funding in July.

Applied Partnership Awards 2022 (APA)

The 2022 call for proposals for Applied Partnership Awards (APA) remains open for Cycle 2 of this rolling call. The scheme supports applied research projects in which researchers and knowledge users come together to develop research projects that address a specific need within the Irish health or social care system. The closing date for submission to Cycle 2 is in February 2023.

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the EU's funding programme for research and innovation. The 2022 single stage calls closed on 21 April 2022 and results will be available around 5th August. Results of the 1st stage of 2-stage calls 2022 calls which closed in February are now available.

Bridge2HE is organising a Full Proposal Check event for Cluster 1 Health second-stage proposals with a deadline in September 2022. The event will take place online, between 25 and 29 July 2022. Register here Cluster 1 Full Proposal Check 2022

The Work Programme with calls for 2023/2024 is now in preparation and it is expected to be published towards the end 2022. Cancer Mission

EU Missions are an additional part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for 2021-2027 aiming to address some of the greatest challenges facing our society.  An online information event was held on 18 May 2022 on the Cancer Mission and the 2022 calls. Here are the slides and the recording is here. 

The 2022 calls launched on 24 May with a total budget €129.56 million and a closing date on 7 September 2022. Topics include Improving & Upscaling primary prevention of cancer through implementation research, Pragmatic clinical trials to optimise treatment for patients, Strengthen Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures, Towards the creation of a European Cancer Patient Digital Centre and Creation of National Mission Hubs Supporting the Mission on Cancer. The 2023 calls will have a possible closing date of Spring 2023.

Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking (GH EDCTP3) calls will close on 30th August 2022. EDCTP supports collaborative clinical trials and clinical studies on poverty-related infectious diseases, as well as the capacity for conducting clinical trials and related research in sub-Saharan Africa.

EU4Health

HaDEA has launched a call under the 2021 EU4Health work programme 2021 EU4Health work programme for an action grant to support the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) to a value of €25M. The grant aims to establish a pilot network of top-class laboratories and research institutes with the expertise and capacities to support HERA in identifying emergent pathogens and ensuring the availability of medical countermeasures for improved health preparedness and response. Application deadline is 18th Aug 2022. For more details visit the call document.

Upcoming Calls

Impact Award 2023

The Impact Award 2023 call will be launched in mid-August with closing date for the applications for nominations towards the end of September 2022. The HRB Impact Award scheme aims to recognise and celebrate the wider benefits and achievements of HRB funded researchers beyond academic impact and it aims to showcase both the achievements and practices of individuals (and their teams) so they can serve as a role model for the wider HRB community to maximise the impact of their research. The award includes a monetary prize of €50,000 which will be granted to the recipient’s chosen HRB–approved Host Institution in support of their work. 

ERA-NET NEURON Joint Transnational Networking Group Call 2022

The Joint Transnational Networking Group Call on “Chronic Pain” was announced on 6 July. The call will open 6 September 2022 with a deadline for submission of 8 November 2022 (dates tentative).

Joint Programming in Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND) Joint Transnational Working Group Call 2022

The call will be announced early autumn and is currently scheduled to launch November 2022.

Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP) 2023  

The HRB intends to launch a new call for Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP) in October 2022, subject to board approval. The scheme supports bringing together researchers, knowledge users and data controllers to develop research projects that answer policy and/or practice-relevant questions through the use of secondary data. More details to follow.
