Three year cross-border investment in palliative care research
The Health Research Board and the Public Health Agency (Northern Ireland) will support recruitment of staff to help maximise knowledge transfer of findings into policy and practice.
The investment of €210,000 is being made to the Palliative Care Research Network (PCRN). The network was set up in 2012 with HRB-funding of €1.25m to co-ordinate the commissioning and learning from palliative care research in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
According to Graham Love, Chief Executive of the Health Research Board, 'This joint-funding is the HRB delivering on our some of our explicit strategic goals, namely to address the research needs of the Irish health and social care system. Our initial investments in the Palliative Care Research Network ensured that the research conducted was relevant to policy and practice. This next investment will help ensure that the findings are now used for evidence-informed decision making in palliative care'.
The PCRN has recently established a Strategic Scientific Committee representative of academics, practitioners, service users and carers as well as funders to plan for palliative care research from 2017-2022 and to ensure that this work engages with parallel research in other areas including primary care and chronic diseases.
Committee Chairperson Professor Sonja McIlfatrick (Ulster University) said,
'This award marks a significant milestone in terms of recognising the impact of the Palliative Care Research Network, for the research it is delivering and the experts it involves. It gives us a strong footing on which to ensure world-class palliative care research across this island and internationally'.
