Irish Healthcare Awards 2016
Congratulations to HRB-funded researcher Professor Fidelma Dunne from NUI Galway who won the overall award at the Irish Healthcare Awards 2016.
The judges deemed that Professor Dunne's research to improve poor pregnancy outcomes for women with diabetes, would have an outstanding impact on patient access and care while also making cost savings to service delivery.
Congratulating Professor Dunne and the other winners, Graham Love, Chief Executive at the Health Research Board commented,
'This, and the other award winners, are an endorsement of the power of health research to improve our health services and the care that we deliver.
For example, as a result of Professor Dunne's work, women with diabetes in pregnancy living in the West of Ireland now have access to a bespoke and sustainable pre-pregnancy care program. The service provides free, gold standard care to optimise their health before embarking on pregnancy and improving pregnancy outcomes. And there is no waiting list to attend the service'.
Congratulations also go to the HRB-funded Cancer Trials Ireland, who won Best Patient Education Award with their 'Just Ask' campaign, which encourages cancer patients to ask their clinicians about their treatment.
And Dr Sean Kirwan from UCD, who received one of only two commendations on the night, for his series of patient information videos produced with his HRB Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Award. Those videos on topics including diabetes and blindness can be viewed on Vimeo at:
