New funds for research in Parkinson’s Disease
The HRB in collaboration with the Medical Council Ireland has launched the award which aims to improve outcomes and lives of people living with Parkinson’s or their carers.
'A total of €750,000 is available for projects that should contain a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) aspect', says Dr Caitriona Creely, Programme Manager at the HRB.
'The deadline for applications is approaching soon, 21 February. The maximum value of awards supported will be between €100,000 and €250,000 for each application'.
'This ‘once off’ call is possible because of a generous gift from the late Mr Patrick Quinn who bequeathed it for research on Parkinson’s disease that would help people living with the illness or people caring for them', she adds.
Given the emphasis on PPI, researchers would be expected to work with people who have Parkinson’s disease, their families, carers or those providing support or care to people living with Parkinson’s disease, such as relevant patient organisations or health care provider.
Proposed research area would include the following:
- Improving activities of daily living for people with Parkinson’s.
- Self and family management tools and approaches for PD.
- People with Parkinson’s, families’ and carers’ experience of healthcare provision/access, as well as means to improve their experience .
- Epidemiology of PD in Ireland.
- Delivery and organisation of care at community, primary care or hospital level.
- Integrated care, with doctors, nurses, health & social care professions, patients, families and patient organisations working together in a collaborative way to improve the patient journey.
- Models of care involving multiple sites.
- Health service developments/reconfiguration.
