In 2006, the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) produced a roadmap including 35 large-scale research infrastructures across a range of disciplines required by European scientists to do cutting edge research over the next 10-15 years and to compete successfully with the USA and Asia. This includes six infrastructures in the biomedical and life sciences. In 2007, EU funding was made available for a two-year planning phase for these infrastructures.
