PPI Ignite

PPI Ignite Awards

The HRB Strategy 2016-2020, Research. Evidence. Action. contains the commitment to strengthen and develop Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research.

We are the first funding agency in Ireland to address this. The HRB is compiling an implementation plan to support PPI both within the HRB and through HRB-supported projects and programmes.

(We will be posting documents relevant to PPI on this page as we develop them.)

The first call principals, called PPI Ignite, are available to download further down this page, and we invite comments from interested parties.

We are using the definition of PPI proposed by INVOLVE: Research carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them ( PPI contributors should be actively involved and part of decision making. Examples of PPI contributions include but are not limited to:

  • joint grant holders or co-applicants on a research project
  • identifying research priorities
  • members of a project advisory or steering group
  • commenting and developing patient information leaflets or other research materials
  • undertaking interviews with research participants
  • user and/or career researchers carrying out the research

PPI does not include the recruitment of study participants. It also does not include work aimed at raising awareness of the public around research, such as media publications of research findings, and outreach activities such as open days in research facilities.

For any further information, and to make comments on the proposals, please e-mail PPI(at)
