Collaborative Applied Research Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research Call for Expressions of Interest 2012

The Collaborative Applied Research Grants are programmatic awards to support teams of high-calibre researchers from academia, health and social services, population health and/or policy institutions who have an existing and impressive track record in applied health services and/or population health research. Collaborative Applied Health Research, as defined for the purposes of this scheme, is research with an emphasis on providing evidence to improve health outcomes for individuals, communities and populations, typically thorough improved healthcare and better health care delivery.

Applied health research in population health and health services research involves building teams across disciplines and is typically multi-disciplinary and collaborative. It can employ quantitative, qualitative or mixed methodologies. Programme Grants typically consist of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to ensure that research objectives can be met.

Applications to this scheme must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Address a question/s of clear strategic relevance and importance to health and social well-being in Ireland and adequately justify why this programme now needs to be conducted in Ireland ;
  • Involve collaborations between researchers, practitioners and institutions, as is appropriate to the research topic;
  • Describe the likely transferability of research findings into recommendations for policy and/or practice as appropriate;
  • Have the potential for the findings to be applied to other issues and situations outside of the immediate area of research;
  • Bring together a team with a strong expertise and track record across a range of disciplines relevant to the research topic;
  • Use rigorous methods, appropriate to the research questions.

Who should apply?

The Principal Investigator must hold a post (permanent or a contract that covers the duration of the award) in a recognised research organisation in the Republic of Ireland as an independent investigator and have a demonstrated record of achievement in applied population health and/or health service research with a broad spectrum of achievements such as publications in peer reviewed journals, published books, reports to government, participation on national advisory groups and/or task forces, input into formal guidelines and protocols, attraction of peer-reviewed grant funding, IP developments and/or commercialisation activities.

The research team should contain the necessary breadth and depth of expertise in the relevant methodological areas required in the development and delivery of the proposed programme.

What does the award include?

The award will provide funding of up to a total of €1.25 million for up to 5 years. Funding will cover salary-related costs, direct running costs, dissemination and knowledge exchange costs, programme management costs and a contribution to overheads.
