Applications are invited from health-related researchers and practitioners working in the Republic of Ireland who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. A doctoral degree or relevant experience in cancer prevention and control is an advantage. Applicants can apply for one or both of these courses.

The Ireland—Northern Ireland—National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium, established in 1999, aims to provide world-class cancer care to people on the island of Ireland. Developing a core of well-trained cancer research specialists is central to attaining this goal and is a key activity of the Consortium. As part of the 2009 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board, in association with the National Cancer Institute in the US and the HSC R&D Office in N. Ireland, invites applications for places on the prestigious NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention programme.
WHAT courses are available on the summer curriculum?
Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control is a four-week course of specialised instruction on concepts, issues and applications in the field of cancer prevention. Participants will gain a broad perspective on these subjects, in terms of resources, data, methods and theories.
Molecular Prevention is a one-week course on molecular aspects of cancer prevention. Participants will be given a firm grounding in the molecular biology and genetics of cancer, and an overview of basic laboratory approaches in the fields of molecular epidemiology, bio-nutrition, chemo-prevention, biomarkers and translational research.

HOW many places are available?
Up to 15 places on each course have been made available for Irish participants by the National Cancer Institute.
WHEN and WHERE will the courses take place?
Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control will run from 6 to 31 July 2009. Molecular Prevention will run from 3 to 7 August 2009. Both courses take place at the National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Maryland, US.
HOW much will the courses cost?
The National Cancer Institute provides these courses free of charge for participants from Ireland. A return economy flight to the US and accommodation costs are paid by the Health Research Board.

Applicants may apply for one or both courses. An eligible application consists of three items:
1. An application form filled in by the applicant and submitted electronically
2. A short Curriculum Vitae submitted electronically
3. A signed letter of support from your employer sent by post
