NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention 2018

The All-Ireland Cancer Consortium aims to provide world-class cancer care to people on the island of Ireland and, to this end, participates in a range of educational programmes. As part of the 2018 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board, in association with the National Cancer Institute in the US and the HSC R&D Office in Northern Ireland, invites applications for the prestigious NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention programme.

Available Courses:

  • Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control 9 July to 3 August 2018. This four-week summer course provides specialized instruction in the principles and practice of cancer prevention and control. It focuses on concepts, issues, and applications related to this field. Participants will gain a broad-based perspective in terms of available resources, and scientific data. For an overview of course offerings, please see

  • Molecular Prevention 6 to 10 August 2018. This one-week course on molecular aspects of cancer prevention provides a strong background in molecular biology and genetics of cancer and an overview of basic laboratory approaches applied to cutting-edge research in the fields of molecular epidemiology, chemoprevention, biomarkers, and translational research. Eligible Applicants:

Applications are invited from health-related researchers and practitioners working in the Republic of Ireland who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. Applicants can apply for one or both of these courses.

Course Dates and Location:

Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control will run from 9 July to 3 August 2018. Molecular Prevention will run from 6 to 10 August 2018. Both courses take place at the National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Maryland, US.


The National Cancer Institute provides these courses free of charge for participants from Ireland. Successful applicants will have a return economy flight to the US, accommodation costs and a small per diem paid by the Health Research Board. This cost contribution is only available to course participants applying through the Health Research Board.

Applicants may apply for one or both courses. An eligible application consists of two items:

  1. An application form filled in by the applicant and submitted electronically (see link below)

  2. A signed letter of support from the applicant’s employer sent by post or scanned and submitted electronically (see link below)

Full application must be submitted by email to Area(at) no later than 1pm on Wednesday, 10 January 2018. Later applications will not be accepted.

Note: Please note this is the deadline for applying to HRB. The date of 1 February 2018 applies to applicants in US applying directly to NCI.

There are no formal eligibility criteria, as the courses would potentially benefit a wide range of participants. Successful applicants are selected by HRB staff according to the following principles:

  • Relevance of the course to their current job and ability to implement learning in professional role

  • Ability to function as a multiplier and to disseminate information

  • Appropriate career level
