PPI Ignite Awards 2017 - Supporting Public and Patient Involvement in Research
Infrastructure and Special Initiatives
Opening Date:
26 October 2016
Closing Date:
1 March 2017
Details:

PPI Ignite awards (supporting public and patient involvement in research) will be jointly funded by the HRB and The Irish Research Council (IRC).

The overarching aim of the PPI Ignite awards is to support and promote capacity building for high quality PPI in health research. It is envisaged that these awards will broaden the group of health researchers who meaningfully involve patients and members of the public in their research in accordance with the core principle values of PPI.  It is expected that the awards will improve the quality of PPI approaches in Irish health and social care research and promote interactions that are seen as fruitful and beneficial by both researchers and PPI contributors.  The remit of PPI Ignite relates to health research across all disciplines.   Given the increasing emphasis on patient and/or public involvement in research in European research funding, PPI Ignite aims to assist in enhancing the capacity of the Irish research system to collaborate internationally and be more competitive. Each award will run over 36 months. The maximum amount available for each award will be €350,000.

Objectives and Deliverables

The objectives of the awards are:

  • To broaden the group of health researchers across all disciplines who meaningfully involve members of the public and patients in their research in accordance with the core principles and values of PPI.
  • To improve the quality of PPI approaches in Irish health and social care research and promote interactions that are seen as fruitful and beneficial by both researchers and PPI contributors. Given the increasing emphasis on patient and/or public involvement in research in European research funding, PPI Ignite aims to assist in enhancing the capacity of the Irish research system to collaborate internationally and be more competitive.

Who should apply?

The scheme is open to all approved HRB Host Institutions. A HRB Host Institution is a research performing organisation that is approved by the HRB for the purpose of receiving and administering HRB grant funding and is responsible for compliance with all general and specific terms and conditions of awards.

Applications are limited to one per institution. Host institutions will identify a Lead Applicant, who must be either an academic employee of the Host Institution or hold a post in the research office. It is expected that the Lead Applicant will hold an appropriate senior management position at corporate, Faculty or School level within the host institution, allowing them to champion PPI, instigate a positive climate for the PPI Ignite team and lead strategic and operational change within the institution. Each eligible institution will need to inform the HRB of their intended Lead Applicant. The application form will be made accessible only to those identified individuals.

Submission and Deadline:

Applications for this scheme should be made by approved HRB Host Institutions corporately and not from individuals. Host institutions will identify a Lead Applicant, who must be either an academic employee of the Host Institution (HI) or hold a post in the research office, to make the application. The Host Institution will inform the HRB of the nominated Lead Applicant who will then be provided with access to the application form. As this is a closed call only lead applicants nominated to the HRB by the Host Institution will have access to the online form.

The Host Institution can nominate the Lead Applicant by emailing Sara Lord at slord@hrb.ie with the name and email address of the Lead Applicant.

Only registered users of the GEMS system can apply for grants. In order to submit an online application to the HRB, applicants are required to register at the following address:

https://grants.hrb.ie

Sara will then provide the nominated Lead Applicant with access to the online application form on the GEMS system. The nominated Lead Applicant will then initiate the application through the GEMS system.

The deadline for submission of complete applications to the HRB is Wednesday 1st March 2017 at 13.00.
