JPND Transnational Call on Pilot Studies on Preventive Strategies
Infrastructure and Special Initiatives
Opening Date:
2 December 2013
Closing Date:
20 February 2014

The problem of age-associated neurodegenerative disorders is a growing socio-economic problem in many countries. Over seven million people in Europe suffer from neurodegenerative diseases, yet treatments that prevent or stop the progression of neurodegeneration are still lacking. This places a heavy burden on the individuals with disease, their relatives and society as a whole; a problem that will worsen as the European population inexorably ages. Tackling this 'grand' challenge is clearly beyond the scope and resources of any one country. To this end, through HRB and SFI, Ireland is currently participating in a member states-led initiative called the EU Joint Programme on Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND). The initiative aims to take a more coordinated and coherent approach to funding research that will tackle a range of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, and has agreed a long term Research Strategy comprising basic, clinical and social and healthcare research priorities which is currently being implemented.

As part of this implementation plan, on December 2nd 2013 JPND launched a joint transnational call launched between 16 countries, including Ireland, to support 'European research projects for Pilot Studies on Preventive Strategies related to Neurodegenerative Diseases'.

Applications are invited from collaborative consortia of researchers from a minimum of three different countries participating in this call. Irish participants in successful consortia to the 'Pilot Studies on Preventive Strategies' call will be funded through the Health Research Board (HRB), to a maximum of €300,000. The call will be conducted simultaneously by the participating funding organisations in their respective countries and coordinated centrally, with a single proposal submission and peer review system.

The aim of the call is to establish pilot initiatives to develop preventive strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

Proposals submitted under the call may include, but are not limited to, the following types of research:

  • Proof of concept and feasibility studies of preventive interventions, including risk and protective factors.
  • Validation studies of preventive interventions
  • Harmonising and improving methodologies for the implementation of preventive strategies as well as appropriate outcome measures across JPND participating countries
  • Investigation of culture specific aspects of interventions
  • Systematic reviews regarding preventive strategies of neurodegenerative diseases.

Full details of the scope of the call can be found in the call text, accessible from the following link

The total fund for this call is over ?11m (for all participating countries). The funding available for successful bids involving research carried out in Ireland will be a maximum of ?300,000 over 36 months. The maximum amount that funders in each country will contribute for successful consortia can be found on this webpage
