The bulk of the Health Research Board budget (HRB) goes towards funding high-quality health research in external institutions, including universities, hospitals and health agencies. Additional funding can be allocated during the year for capital expenses, including equipment and information systems.

Research funded by the HRB is carried out by a variety of researchers across the health spectrum, such as bio-scientists, clinicians, social scientists and other health professionals. A full list of all current HRB grant holders is available in this section.

The HRB welcomes applications for funding across all areas of health research, such as clinical research, patient-oriented research, population health sciences research and applied health services research. Occasionally, the HRB will allocate additional resources at the request of the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) for research into specific health issues. Some recent examples of HRB-funded strategic initiatives include the Clinical Research Facilities and the Autism Genome Project.

Success rates vary from scheme to scheme and are influenced by the funding budget available in a given year and the number of applications.
