The Higher Education Research Group (HERG) was established to co-ordinate higher education research policy at national level. The HERG is chaired by the Department of Education and Science (DES). Members include representatives from relevant government departments (Education and Science, Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Health and Children, Environment and Local Government, Agriculture and Food) and from state agencies with an active interest in research conducted in the higher education system (HEA, SFI, IDA, EI, HRB).
The HERG is one of three sub committees reporting to the Inter-Departmental Committee on Science and Technology (IDC), along with the Health Research Group (HRG) and Technology Ireland. The IDC in turn reports to the Cabinet Sub Committee on Science and Technology.
The HERG has set up three working groups:
- Research Capacity
- Research Careers
- Indicators for the SSTI (Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation)
The Group meets on average every two months.
