The European Commission’s main funding scheme for implementing the EU's health strategy is the Health Programme.  The Health Programme aims to;

  • improve the level of physical and mental health and well-being of EU citizens and
  • reduce health inequalities throughout the Community.

The Health Programme 2008-2013 is managed by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (formerly Public Health Executive Agency). The programme has a budget of €321.5 million and launches annual calls for research proposals, normally early each year.

Public health research is a primary focus, and priority research areas include;

  • health security
  • health promotion
  • reducing health inequalities
  • generating and disseminating health information and knowledge
