The European Science Foundation (ESF) was established in 1974 with the core purpose of promoting high quality science and scholarship at a European level. It is an association of 80 member organisations devoted to research in 30 European countries. In Ireland, the HRB, SFI, Enterprise Ireland, IRCSET and IRCHSS are members of the ESF. A key objective of the ESF is to facilitate cooperation and collaboration in European science and scholarship on behalf of its principal stakeholders (Member Organisations and Europe's scientific community). Such collaborations include the formulation of Policy Briefings, Forward Looks and Guidelines and Codes of Practice on a range of topics of interest to stakeholders.
An important mechanism in coordinating and drafting Guidelines and Codes of Practice is the use of member Fora. There are currently 4 ESF Fora working in different areas and HRB staff are active in all of these.
