HRB Board appoints Graham Love as Chief Executive

6 January 2014

Dr Graham Love will take up the position of Chief Executive at the Health Research Board in March 2014.

Welcoming the appointment, Dr Declan Bedford, Chairman at the HRB, expressed great confidence in Dr Love's ability to deliver real results at the Health Research Board;

'Graham is a strong leader with a proven track record of delivering concrete results in challenging circumstances. His rise through management consultancy, Accenture, and his achievements at Science Foundation Ireland, where he transformed their strategic agenda and secured the funding to do it in spite of austerity, are testament to the calibre of leader he is.

I believe his expertise, strategic thinking and sharp business acumen will ensure that the HRB drive positive changes in health policy and practice, contribute to a healthy Ireland and create opportunities for innovation and economic growth'.

Dr Love said,

'Research has great potential to positively influence change and I believe this is particularly tangible when it comes to health. I look forward to working with the team at the HRB to deliver research programmes and new evidence that will improve people's health, patient care and health service delivery'.

Graham will bring 15 years leadership and senior management experience to the HRB. He is currently Chief Executive of Molecular Medicine Ireland.

Previous positions include a variety of senior roles at Science Foundation Ireland including Interim Director General, Director of Policy and Communications and Director of Discover Science and Engineering. During his time at SFI he was responsible for the development of SFI's 2009-2013 strategy, Powering the Smart Economy, a €1.1 billion plan to drive delivery of the Government's enterprise science agenda and its successor, Agenda 2020. He also led SFIs involvement in the Government Research Prioritisation programme and the Innovation Task Force.

Graham was Chief Executive of The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland between 2005 and 2006. Before this he spent almost a decade with management consulting firm, Accenture, where he worked with clients in the communications and high-tech sector, including Microsoft and Vodafone. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology in 1993, followed by a PhD in vascular cell biology in 1997 from University College Dublin.

Graham will take over from Enda Connolly, the current CEO, who is leaving the HRB at the end of January.
